Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Is Possible

Alcohol and Drug Addiction: Recovery Is Possible

Usually the first step in the recovery process and making a change occurs only after you have admitted that your life has become unmanageable and the negative consequences are great!
Fortunately, it really does not matter how you have come to this conclusion, but that you are seeking help to deal with your circumstances and want to change this cycle of addiction.
One of the first changes that must happen is discovering a different way of coping with life's daily struggles without the use of drug's and/or alcohol.
This step is often the most difficult for most because it involves a change in behavior, a change in the way you have usually dealt with daily problems. The self medicating is not an option. The numbing or euphoric feeling that you want no longer can be achieved through drugs and/or alcohol.
Sometimes the pain is overwhelming at this stage, making your drug-free life seem impossible once in the grips of addiction. Take your recovery in small steps, as the saying goes "One Day At A Time". This saying has great meaning and becomes more clear as you become clean and sober.
It is easy to project into the future making staying clean and sober insurmountable at the beginning. Once past detoxing your body and having a more clearly focused mind taking "one day at a time" seems perhaps so practical.
It alleviates so much worry and time absorbed in your addiction because you only have to stay clean today. You can tell yourself "I can drink or drug tommorrow but today I will stay clean and sober." What seems to happen then is that when tommorrow comes, you realize how much better you feel, grateful that you got through another day without the use of drugs or alcohol, so repeating it again "Just For Today I will stay clean and sober."

So the cycle begins of recovery and freedom from addiction, The fortunate thing is recovery is possible and is being achieved everyday by people with the right medical help and social support.

Always Remember you are a good person with a bad disease!!

Contributor's Note

I have met some of the greatest and kindest people inside the walls of rehab. Addiction is a self destructive disease- Please always remember what a good person you are and no matter how many times you may fall, brush yourself off and start again - all the best god bless
